# How to Export Your Browser Passwords to Migrate to a New Computer

Switching computers? Here’s a quick guide to exporting your saved passwords from the most common browsers so you don’t lose access to your accounts during the migration.

## Google Chrome

1. Open Chrome and go to **Settings** (three dots menu, top right)
2. Click **Autofill** → **Password Manager**
3. Click the settings gear icon next to “Saved Passwords”
4. Click **Export passwords** and save the CSV file securely

## Microsoft Edge

1. Open Edge and go to **Settings** (three dots menu)
2. Click **Passwords**
3. Click the three-dot menu next to “Saved passwords”
4. Select **Export passwords** and save the file

## Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Firefox and click the menu button (three lines)
2. Go to **Passwords**
3. Click the three-dot menu in the top right of the passwords window
4. Select **Export Logins** and save the CSV file

## Apple Safari (Mac)

1. Open Safari and go to **File** → **Export** → **Passwords**
2. Authenticate with your Mac password or Touch ID
3. Save the CSV file in a secure location

## Important Security Warning

The exported password file is a plain text CSV that anyone can read. **Treat it like cash.** Once you’ve imported your passwords on the new computer, delete the export file immediately from both computers and empty the Recycle Bin / Trash.

**Pro tip:** This is a great time to switch to a dedicated password manager like Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass. They sync securely across all your devices and are far safer than browser-stored passwords. safemode IT recommends and deploys business password managers as part of our managed IT service.
